Questions and Answers

Q: I’ve never hired a graphic designer before: where do I start?
A. Give us a call, send us a FAX or send an e-mail outlining your project needs. Our phone number is 781-3331, our FAX number is 781-383-3332 and you can e-mail us from our FEEDBACK page.

Q: How do you estimate the cost of your design work?
A: We can work one of two ways: First, we discuss your objectives and come back to you with estimated cost based on time, materials, and resources we feel are required to produce an effective solution for your communication needs. If specifications should change along the way, we’ll keep you posted on the impact your changes (or ours!) will have on the cost. The second option is for us to work within budget parameters supplied by you to provide you with the best communications solution for your available dollars.

Q: Do you require upfront funds?
A: We ask first-time clients for an advance payment of 30% of the estimated project cost. Thereafter, we will bill clients at the project’s completion unless we are working on large projects where a substantial outlay of time and resources is required of Coughlin Design. In those cases, we may request “progress billing,” especially if outside writers, photographers or illustrators are to be paid prior to project completion. In all cases, we require company purchase orders once project goals are defined.

Q: What is the best way for my company to interact with
Coughlin Design during a project?
A: In the best of all worlds, Coughlin Design will work one-on-one: one client point person and one designer. Other individuals may be involved to review other disciplines (e.g., copywriting), but the number of actual decision-makers should be kept to a minimum.

Q: How do you show us your designs while the project is
evolving and before we go to press?

A: We can create design PDF files that we can send to you for review via e-mail. We can also send you hardcopy proofs via snail mail for color verification (since PDF files and/or certain computer monitors may distort color). Prior to printing, we will send you a hardcopy mock-up of your piece, indicating proper color and positioning. Lastly, your printer will show you a high-end color proof for final approval before you go to press.

Q: What about printing the job — can you help us?
A: We can prepare a project for you up through pre-press to be printed at a printer of your choosing or we can recommend a printer and see the project though printing (including on-site press approvals) to its completion..
